-
First, clear the lawn of any debris (sticks, stones, trash, etc.)
-
Now, lower your mower deck a notch, you’ll want to cut the grass a bit lower than normal to help the new seed penetrate down to the soil easier.
-
Time to aerate! This is the process of poking holes throughout your lawn. This will help the new seed get deeper into the soil and also promotes other healthy soil attributes to give your new seed the best chance to grow. (here’s our aerating guide)
-
Fill your favorite spreader with the appropriate lawn seed and start spreading. Be sure to follow the instruction on your specific spreader to ensure the correct amount of seed is distributed to your lawn.
-
Water your lawn regularly to keep the soil moist. Don’t overwater. Just be sure the soil doesn’t completely dry out while the new seed is attempting to take root.
-
Wait patiently for the new grass to grow. No mowing yet!
-
Once the new grass has reached a height of about 3 inches, mow it to a height of 2 inches
-
Continue to mow your lawn regularly
When To Overseed Your Lawn?

The best time to overseed your lawn is in the fall, after the hottest part of the summer has passed.
You can also overseed in the spring, but fall is the ideal time. The soil is still warm from the summer, which helps the seeds germinate, and the cooler temperatures are better for new grass growth.
Aim to overseed 30 days before your area’s first expected frost. This gives the grass time to grow and establish before winter sets in.
